Pet Health: Insurance Company Survey  E-mail

Still considering Pet Insurance? Well perhaps the following may help you decide.

In May 2007 Petcover conducted a survey where 311 dog and cat owners around Australia were interviewed. Highlights from this survey are as follows:

  •  Nearly one in two (45%) pet owners have been surprised by an unexpectedly high vet bill.

  • Of these cases, 46% of owners were given a bill of $500 or more.

  • High vet bills have led to arguments in one in every six pet owners’ households.

  • 17% of pet owners currently budget for vet bills in their household bills.

  • Taking on debt would be the way the majority (68%) of pet owners would deal with an unexpected treatment for their pet that they could not afford.

From earlier research Petcover conducted in April 2006, where ACA Research on behalf of Petcover interviewed 253 vets across metro and regional Australia:

  •  As many as 6,000 ill or injured dogs and cats are euthanised each week due to owners’ inability or unwillingness to pay for potentially life-saving vet treatment

  • 65% of vets indicated that in a regular week, they would see more than 20 cats and dogs treated for injury

  • Around 22% of treatment courses for sick or injured cats and dogs cost more than $400 per annum

  • There are high volumes of relevant veterinary cases where pet insurance would be of benefit to owners, perhaps as many as 15,000 per week.
