I took time on Saturday to pop along to the National Cat Show put on by The Coordinating Cat Council of Australia Inc. and the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy Australia & Victoria Inc.

First up, let me say this is my first ever Cat or Dog show I have ever attended - yes, I am a lover of Cats and Dogs as pets, but attending any type of animal show is not something I have ever actually considered! To say the least it was very interesting, perhaps my only problem was the lack of information easily accessible to a layman like myself - no brochures or handouts (that I could see anyway) that would help me understand how things work. But that aside, it certainly was a most impressive array of cats on display.

Judging

I watched a number of judging events. I have to say that I liked the way the judges talk through their judging, this was really quite helpful to me, it gave me a peek at some of the intricacies that go into judging and what they are looking for and why this compares to that and so on. Specially given this was my first show and all I saw when i walked in was a lot of great looking cats - so hearing from a judge what they were looking at and for just made me all the more appreciative of what I was seeing. I think i even caught myself at some point nodding knowingly at some of the judges comments...probably more just a reaction to what the very knowledgeable audience was doing rather than some sudden insight into feline fancy.

However, I applauded politely when appropriate (always the last to start and the first to finish, that way you don't look like a complete fool!

As always, volunteers work hard!
I took my time to wander around and there were a couple of Breeders by their cat's cages - they were incredibly helpful, nice and very revealing about the history of their beloved fur balls! I am, more educated now.

A couple of the volunteers who were not running around madly trying to get things done also took time out to talk to me (even before I introduced who I was) which I thought was great - they could have thought I was an annoying member of the public, but they were excellent...kudos to them.

All in all I enjoyed my first ever animal show - as one would expect, pet owners are friendly and always ready to talk about their babies!

I have had a couple of people come through with some results, as soon as I have a few more then I will post them here (perhaps along with a few pictures).

What next's next? Must be a dog show going on around here soon!
